...and so is the spitfire project :) i’ve finally managed to string together two solid days to get my rear wishbones sorted.

Kinja'd!!!

I started by tapping some cds tube with 1/2” left and right hand threads so a threaded adjuster in the middle can shorten or lengthen them to adjust camber and toe. Then i notched them with a cheap ebay tube notcher (worked ratger well) and made a jig to hold them in the right place

Kinja'd!!!

Then tacked them in place

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The actual welding was probably the easiest i’ve ever done :) whacked it up high enough to give me sunburn on my hand and welded away :) all solid

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And when i get home i’ll paint it and hook it all up :) oh, and when i get paid on friday i’ll be able to afford my quaife lsd!

It’s an absolute delight to weld things when you can get away with using enough power. It’s the fiddly rusted 22GA crap that’s a nuisance - the heavy stuff just requires turning it up until it all starts to blend nicely...

It would take an extreme nutter to make a bomb with reverse threads. I mean, there’s crazy, and then there’s absolutely nuts.

Agreed. I went from welding this to welding a patch onto my mate’s peugeot 106 which is pretty much made out of kitchen foil. Much trickier...

I don’t think I ever took that close a look at your welder while I was there. The one at my place is a 172A one with only four power settings, so dialing in the right technique for the power you have is the only option - not fun. Switching from .035 to .030 wire made a huge difference welding 20GA galvanized, though - with the extra heat the burning zinc adds, I was blowing straight through like it was half the thickness on setting 2 and not quite sticking with setting 1...

Ah that sounds like the trouble my mate was having with his 106. It was either blowing through or not sticking at all til we ground the galv off. We’re lucky with our welder in that it’s an old one from a factory in Italy (all the dials are in Italian: ‘Velocita Filo’ sounds so much cooler than ‘Wire Speed’). It’s got loads of settings we haven’t even played with yet, like a pulse setting which you can set the duration and frequency of the weld pulses.

Old, but quality when it was new :)
